Weekly Review No 151 (1944) Canadian Brides Arrive: The arrival of19 young women who New Zealand servicemen met and married while training in Canada. They've give up the maple leaf for the fern leaf and are here to live. 01.55 Schools Visit Show of British Childrens Paintings: Pupils in the arts and crafts class a Clyde Key School in Wellington demonstrate their skills including lino cutting, marbling, spinning, weaving and painting. The pupils also visit an exhibition of paintings by British children. 04.30 Ministers Visit West Coast Open Cast Mine: Sluices work on the old gold mining area of Charleston on the South Island West Coast to expose a shining seam of coal. Some gold is also recovered in the sluicing process. A ministerial party from Wellington tours the mining operation. At Stockton, the overburden to be removed consists of hard sandstone which needs explosive shots to loosen. The ministerial party takes cover from the blasts. Bulldozers clear the shattered rock away and samples of the exposed coal are taken. It is estimated there is about 10 million tones of coal to be won from the Stockton field using this open-cast method. Duration 08.16
