Weekly Review No 179 (1945) New Zealanders Receive US Legion of Merit: At Trentham Base, Legion of Merit honours are awarded to New Zealand officers who played major roles in the combined US/NZ operations in the Pacific War. 01.10 Welcome American and Canadian Brides: The brides of NZ airmen who had been stationed in America and Canada arrive in New Zealand for the first time. 01.55 Official Visit Pacific Islands: Prime Minister Peter Fraser tours Pacific Islands where he is welcomed with dance, song and kava ceremonies. The Islanders are recognised for their wartime contribution - guarding their shores, raising defence forces and fighting when called upon to do so. 04.45 Craftsmanship, a Modern Glass Blower: A carnival in Wellington organised by the RSA includes a display of glassblowing - a trade requiring very few tools but great skill and technique. Glassblowing is also put to work making condenser bulbs for use in scientific laboratories and in the manufacture of spirit levels. A huge fractionating column for reclaiming solvents is also shown.
